How to Use the Restaurant Food Cost Calculator
Enter total food and beverage cost and total food sales for the same period. The calculator divides food cost by food sales to estimate your food cost percentage. You can also enter the ingredient cost of one menu item and a target food cost percentage to estimate a suggested menu price.
Restaurant Food Cost Percentage Formula
Food cost percentage = (Food cost ÷ Food sales) × 100. For example, if food and beverage costs are $12,000 and related sales are $40,000, the food cost percentage is 30%.
How to Calculate Food Cost Per Serving
Add the cost of every ingredient used in one serving, including garnishes, sauces and other components consistently used in the dish. If a recipe produces multiple portions, divide total recipe ingredient cost by the number of portions.
How Suggested Menu Price Is Calculated
This tool uses a simple target-cost method: ingredient cost per serving ÷ target food cost percentage = suggested menu price. A $6 ingredient cost with a 30% target produces a $20 suggested price. Actual pricing should also consider labor, rent, utilities, waste, delivery fees, taxes, competition and customer value.
Food Cost vs. Restaurant Profit Margin
Food cost is only one part of restaurant profitability. Labor, occupancy, marketing, insurance and other operating expenses also affect the bottom line. For a broader view, use our restaurant profit margin calculator to estimate net profit, prime cost and break-even revenue.
Why Restaurant Food Cost Tracking Matters
Tracking food cost over time can help restaurant operators spot ingredient-price increases, portion-control issues, waste and changes in menu mix. Comparing periods consistently is generally more useful than relying on a single calculation.
